Kindergartners Can Be Storytellers, Too! is a literacy program which will help increase my students' comprehension. Comprehension is an area on our distict's criterion reference test, where over the past years, kindergartners have scored the lowest. This program will provide students the opportunity to listen to stories and retell them using story props. The story props will help students recall parts of the story and will encourage timid students to participate in group activities. The props will provide students a comfort zone, since the "props will be telling the story" instead of them.
The program will be implemented in a kindergarten classroom located in Southeast Louisiana. This kindergarten is located at the only elementary school in Plaquemines Parish, which did not suffer major damage from Hurricane Katrina. Every kindergarten teacher and student from Plaquemines is now attending this school.
The program will provide the materials needed to create a story telling center for 12 different stories. Each day 4-5 students will work at this center for 30 minutes, while other students work at different centers or participate in small group lessons with the teacher. Each week there will be a new book and props at the center.
At the storytelling center, students will listen to a story on CD or cassette while following along in an individual book, which will be borrowed from the school or public library. Upon completion of the story, the students will use story props, puppets, felt board pieces or costumes to retell the story. Students will use the individual books as a resource, to aid in the retelling if necessary. Every student will complete a book review worksheet which will entail writing whether or not they enjoyed the story. Completing activities which involve identifying the characters, sequence of events and cause and effect of a particular part of the story will also be a requirement of this center.
When the criterion reference test is administered in May, I will compare the comprehension scores to those from last year.
