My students need technology to allow them to use online applications to help them succeed in school, from listening to books read to them, to using educationally sound websites.
I currently have 19 Kindergarten students who are eager to learn! Most are about age 5 and for many, this is their first experience of school. About 1/3 of my class acquired English as a second language, so everything is a new experience to them.
Kindergarten is a huge year in terms of growth, language acquisition and math skills.
Research shows that growth of vocabulary is so important as vocabulary is causally linked to reading comprehension. Number sense is crucial in the development of mathematical skills. I want my students to learn as much language and math as possible and gain as much vocabulary and number sense as they can to give them the most opportunities for success when it comes to formalized reading and math.
The first year of formal schooling is most important. Having an inviting classroom where real-world skills are taught is essential to educating the whole child. These students deserve that!
My Project
In this day and age of technology, Kindergarteners already come to school with an interest and engagement in learning through technology. So much is done on computers that I want to have more computers accessible to my students to use.
Chromebooks can be used in a variety of ways -- from listening to books read aloud, to practicing math skills taught in class, to accessing a multitude of websites that are educationally sound.
Giving my students Chromebooks will give them access to all of these resources, since computers are very limited in my classroom. With the addition of two Chromebooks to start (and hopefully more to come in the future) my goal is that ultimately each student in my room will be able to have access to their own technology source (whether it be iPads, Kindles or desktop computers) so that online learning can occur in my classroom, while I simultaneously work with small groups of students to further their learning.
The students in my class get so excited about using technology to aid in their learning and I want to keep that excitement up by having more technology choices. The addition of Chromebooks will give the students something new and exciting to work with.
