My urban kindergarten students are starting school as distance learners! They will need to learn how to get along and express their needs in a Zoom meeting, a virtual social group setting, which is especially challenging since many of my students did not attend preschool and may not have had the opportunity to use technology. In addition, they are expected to develop foundation skills in reading, writing and math!
About 50% percent of my kindergartners are English language learners and are classified as Newcomers because they entered my classroom speaking very little or no English.
Our small, Title I school is located in an urban, high-poverty neighborhood in Northern California. My kindergartners are eager to learn and full of energy. Many of my families are unable to provide access to lots of books at home and may not have reliable Internet access.
My Project
To encourage early literacy, I am requesting 10 more stories (levels 3 and 4) from the King School First Grade Series of leveled readers for every student to use during distance learning. Generous DonorsChoose donors recently funded another project so that my students would have their own Kindergarten Series Collection (levels 1 and 2). The Kindergarten and First Grade Collections include a total of 70 different stories, which include diverse characters and situations with whom my students can relate.
This project will provide essential resources, so that my students can practice reading at home each day or night.
Now is the time to develop good reading habits and these wonderful King School leveled readers contain humorous situations, characters who resemble my students, plus those high frequency words my students must memorize to be successful readers.
