Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 25 urban kindergarten and first grade students are learning how to read, write, count, and how to get along in a social group setting, which is especially important since many of my students did not attend preschool.
Our small, Title 1 school is located in an urban, high-poverty neighborhood in northern California.
At least 81% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches, and many of them are English language learners. My 25 kindergarten and first grade students are eager to learn and full of energy. Many of my families are unable to take their children to the library, or to provide access to lots of books at home.
My Project
My urban students adore Mo Willems and would love to have access to 3 more titles which include the latest adventures of his beloved characters, such as Gerald and Piggie and Pigeon. We would use the Mo Willems biography as part of our Mo Willems author study and the books will be a welcomed addition to our classroom library.
To encourage home literacy, I am requesting a complete collection of the King School Series of leveled readers for kindergarten and first grade. (We need two sets of the kindergarten stories). The series includes a total of 60 different stories which include characters and situations my students can identity with. We will use the clear, zip binder pouches for safely transporting the leveled readers to and from school. Many of my parents have requested more books to borrow for use at home.
The laminating pouches will be used to create various class poems and songs my students can practice reading during independent reading time.
This project will provide the resources needed for my emerging readers to practice reading at home each night.
Now is the time to develop good reading habits and these wonderful King School leveled readers contain humorous situations and characters who resemble my students, plus those high frequency words my students must memorize to be successful readers. The Mo Willems books will encourage their love of reading, while learning more about the author Mo Willems.
