I'm beginning my fourth year teaching Kindergarten and I never want to teach any other grade! My kids are so open to everything I expose them to and are so enthusiastic to learn new things. My kindergarten classroom was just added this year as a new, third section of kindergarten at my urban Charter School. Therefore, the classroom library is not as extensive as I would like. I've amassed my own collection of books over the years, but I would love to obtain more 'big books' to use during our Reader's Workshop. Big books allow children to see how to track print, notice sight words, and see phonetic elements that would be impossible to see if I were reading a normal book. In Kindergarten, shared reading is a critical component to a high quality reading program. I feel strongly that exposure and explicit instruction in these areas creates stronger readers. A collection of "Big Books" would be the perfect addition to my classroom. They would be used everyday during our morning Shared Reading and reader's workshop time. Thank you for your consideration of my proposal!
