Kindergarteners Love to Read!

Help me give my students accessible bookshelves and soft seating options to increase choice and engagement.

My Project

My kindergarten class loves to read, but our classroom doesn't have a dedicated reading space.

An accessible, cozy reading spot will allow our young students more self-selection of reading materials and keep them engaged with comfortable seating options.

Research shows that "well designed libraries resulted in significantly greater participation in free choice reading" (Martinez & Teale 1988, https://www.jstor.org/stable/20199858).

Two book displays will feature titles related to our current area of focus. For example, in September, the display will hold books related to the first day of school and other "how to do school" options. In February, we study community helpers, and the displays will be filled with books about firefighters, farmers, chefs, and other jobs in our communities.

The soft seating options make a welcome change from sitting on the thin rug or in chairs at tables. Kids should be physically comfortable in their classroom - it's part of making them feel welcome and included.
