My students need a social studies resource to help them become great citizens.

Kindergarten is a time of exciting exploration! Kindergarteners are able to begin to understand their place in a much larger world than what they have previously known. We need a social studies resource to help us do this!
My students are from a low-income neighborhood with hard working parents.
They are energetic, enthusiastic, and curious! Lots of common ideas and places are new to them because their exposure to life outside their neighborhood is limited. They really enjoy learning about new people and places.
Scholastic "Let's Find Out" is a reading, science and social studies resource for the Kindergarten classroom. Along with a weekly magazine focusing on a range of thematic seasonal topics, there is an online version as well. The online component has video clips, games, and extension activities to further reinforce the facts found in the magazine. Visual support when teaching science and social studies is critical. Lots of critical thinking skills are built through comparing and contrasting photographs like the ones found in "Let's Find Out". Our students have very low language exposure and are not familiar with rich descriptive words. "Let's Find Out" will allow us to not only meet basic social studies and science standards, but build vital vocabulary skills needed to become fluent readers and descriptive writers. The best part is students will take home their own magazine to read with friends and family to further reinforce vocabulary development and get families
My students are not often exposed to various types of media and print.
This magazine is a valuable resource to generate interest in reading, writing and the world around them. This magazine is a way for them to gain exposure to the possibilities outside of their home environment.
