Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Kindergarten in a public school on the east side of San Jose, California. This year I have 19 eager students who come from a low socio-economic neighborhood. 17 of my students primarily speak a language other than English. This can make learning their letters and the sounds that they make very difficult. These children also come from many different cultural backgrounds.
Every week we do a cooking project. That cooking project is correlated to our letter for the week. For instance, last week was the letter B, so we cooked biscuits. My partner teacher and I try to expose the children to new foods that they may have never tried before.
I am writing this proposal to better equip us to cook at school. On most Friday mornings my partner and I can be found lugging in pots, pans, bowls, and spoons from our own homes. Then, hopefully, we remember to take them home at the end of the day to cook dinner for ourselves. I am asking for a variety of cooking supplies to stock our classroom. They include: pots, pans, spoons, bowls, measuring cups, cookie cutters, salt and pepper shakers, and many more. Integrating cooking into our weekly routine allows my students to use numbers in a more concrete way and connect letters to foods. They will see that numbers are used for more than just counting. Teaching my students how to make simple foods will not only excite them about learning, but it will provide them with practical life skills that will allow them to help out at home as they get older.
Thank you so much for taking the time to consider my students.
