We need more learning time! We have rest mats stacked in the corner and backpacks two and three deep. I waste lots of learning time passing out rest mats and backpacks each day. It would provide students more learning time if they could independently retrieve their mats and find their backpacks.
My students are energetic 5-year-olds excited about their first year of school.
As kindergartners, they love music, movement, talking, and laughing. My students are a mix of middle class and poverty level. There is a large percentage of students on free or reduced lunch. My students are excited to learn and look forward to the year ahead.
My Project
Lockers may not be exciting. Lockers do not have bells and whistles. Most would say lockers were not an integral part of the learning process. However, in my classroom of twenty-five 5-year-olds, lockers would be a great asset. Since our rest mats are stacked in the corner of my classroom, each day at rest time I have to unfold each mat, look for the name on the mat, and then pass it to the appropriate student. This takes a lot of time away from learning each day. There is a similar routine each afternoon when students are digging through the backpack hooks looking for their backpack. Again, this takes a lot of time.
I would much rather have my students spend their school time learning instead of sitting around waiting for me to pass them their mats or backpacks. Another advantage of the lockers is that it would teach my students independence. They can grow to be independent young people!
Storage lockers will provide my students the benefits of more learning time and more independence.
Students can independently retrieve their rest mats, backpacks, mail, and supplies. Lockers will also offer us more learning time since I will have the job of "teacher" and not the job of "mat passer outer."
