It is so hard to teach science, which is a hands on branch of education, without appropriate materials for doing so. These materials will enable my kindergarteners to work hands on in science to help meet the new core curriculum standards.,
My students are a heterogeneous mix of boys and girls who love science.
It is by far their favorite subject and they find it fascinating to have their little fingers in materials whenever possible. I have 20 children and limited supplies to use with them in our public school. They are inquisitive and want to learn. This would help them meet the increasing demands from the state of NY to build on their science knowledge with materials that are appropriate for their grade level.
My Project
With these materials the children will be able to do hands on experiments and to have centers that are science based. There will be materials appropriate for them on their grade level rather than borrowing from older grades. It will enable them to change their lives to see the wonders of the science curriculum up close and personal rather than just through reading materials. One of the materials I have requested is a basic science set of materials that vary in curriculum units specific to kindergarten. It covers a variety of topics all with hands on materials. This will help in many different units I will teach. Also I have requested a model of a plant that opens up to show the various sections of a plant. Planting is one of the life science units I teach every year. Having something of this nature will allow the children to see inside the plant and really get a feel for the parts of it.
Science tends to be a forgotten subject in kindergarten mainly due to the lack of supplies.
This would help us find this lost subject. I know that my children would absolutely love to have materials that they can touch and use rather than just seeing pictures of them in books.
