My students need leveled library books and a book activity box.
My students are excited to read materials at their level. Beginning readers increase their self esteem when they are surrounded by materials that they can read on their own. The children light up when they are able to read books on their own. They need that feeling to encourage reading stamina.
My students look at many books, but they are not able to read those books because the books are not at the individual students' reading levels.
These children are motivated to read. Many of them say that their favorite time of the week is to go to the library. Our school has many wonderful books, but we are desperately lacking leveled readers that would be just right for kindergarten. At recent parent/teacher conferences, many parents were asking how they can get leveled readers into the hands of their children. We do not even have access to such books for parents to check out. Children are eager and parents are eager; all we need are the books.
These books will allow me to provide students with the opportunity to read during their free choice times, literacy center activities, and homework practice. If students are surrounded by books, they will read them! They quickly read through books and they need numerous practice opportunities. Students will use the leveled readers on a daily basis. The books will be shared with other classroom kindergarten teachers as well so that all of our students can benefit from the use of the books and literacy activity centers. Additionally, we will use the Informational Text center as part of our writing component for the overall literacy development of the students.
With more opportunities to read, students will become better readers.
When students become better readers, they will be able to open the world of knowledge. They will work toward understanding a wide variety of academic content. Because this project will provide more choices to read, students will more than likely find books of interest. When students are engaged in their reading, they are more likely to read over and over again which enhances their reading fluency as well.Read More
