This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The kindergartners all come from different academical, cultural, and economical backgrounds. Some students may even be visiting from different countries, knowing little to no English.
Many of our kindergartners come being eager to learn, play, and meet new friends.
They are very cheerful, at times mischievous, but many times happy to be at school to learn new things.
This year, we have 23 students. They are currently mastering their skills in reading through letters and sounds, sight words, and pictures. They are moving towards learning how to read CVC words and knowing how to use these new skills in their independent reading.
My Project
For our literacy centers, we have four 15-minute guided reading groups daily. Students learn to read by working on their letters and sounds, sight words, decoding skills, phonics, and etc. Through daily practice, students slowly learn to read books independently. Meanwhile, the other groups all have different centers such as the Parent Game Center, Sight Word Center, Word Work, Listening Center, Library Center, Buddy Read, Alphabet Book, and etc. Many times, they are working independently as the teacher focuses instruction on one group at a time.
The materials will help make a difference in students' learning since it will provide kindergarten level books for students to practice reading independently.
Students will gain confidence in their reading skills as they continue to apply the skills they have learned through their guided reading group.
