My Students
My students live in a high poverty rural area in Southeastern Kentucky. Many of the families of my students are unable to adequately provide basic necessities and as a result, classroom supplies are very limited. My students are a hardworking and bright group. They simply need a helping hand to ensure their continued success in developing their reading skills. Many of my students come from families where books are a luxury that cannot be afforded, making books in the classroom even more important.
My Project
I am working to gather materials to implement a guided reading program in my kindergarten classroom. Guided reading groups allow students to obtain small group reading instruction that is tailored to their specific needs and reading level.
Guided reading programs are successful in reaching struggling readers and in challenging proficient readers.
This is a program I am very excited to implement for my students, but I need help in purchasing the necessary materials. I have a very limited classroom budget which is mostly spent on purchasing basic classroom materials such as pencils and crayons.
My students and I would greatly appreciate your help in obtaining the materials we need to become better readers.
