Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a proud teacher of 21 wonderful kindergarten students in a Dual Language program, at a Title I school in the suburbs of Chicago. For my students, I am their first experience in school and a very important year in providing opportunities in creating long lasting skills that will provide the base of their education.
Despite their living arrangements, including homeless and foster homes, my students come to school eager to learn, work hard, and feel welcomed in a safe and engaging environment.
As their teacher, I have promised to do anything I can to make these goals realistic, by providing them an engaging positive environment to thrive!
My Project
Our school is creating an amazing HUGE project in celebration of Black history month; a living museum! The whole school is participating in the event and community leaders have been invited to attend the many 'classrooms' of the living museum. Each team has a theme and Kindergarten chose Africa, African animals, and habitats in Africa. We are going to bring a SAFARI to LIFE! In addition, after sharing my idea with a community leader, which owns an Black history museum, she has requested my students' African Masks on loan, to be displayed at the museum! But...we have no art materials! These materials will help in making the many components of our class projects a success!
Using art allows the students to interpret, criticize, and use their visual information, to show their understanding through projects and creations.
First we are going to create a safari, complete with huge cardboard giraffes, hanging monkeys, and hungry hippos. We have special "natives" (my students) that will walk visitors around and "teach" about the animals and habitats, while visitors can explore and celebrate the rich history of West African Kente cloth weaving and basket weaving with the The Roylco Kente Card Wall Hanging which includes all we need, like strips of cloth, students may weave through the mat bases and watch as bright, colorful patterns form. Our Dashiki African Clothes will be attempted using the colorful dyes and I am super excited about the masks I requested. Masks are a popular tradition in many cultures. African masks were worn for celebrating victory, to ward off evil, and for storytelling. I will be incorporating a few lessons on African folk tales along with this class project, and have students represent different characters or feelings with each mask. And the fact that they will be on displayed!
