I teach in a low-income and high poverty school with a high number of single-parent families. My students start their school careers already at a disadvantage with things that are out of their control. My goal as a kindergarten teacher is to look past the disadvantages and monopolize on the potential of each individual student.
My young learners are full of curiosity and yearn for fun, engaging, and interactive learning opportunities.
Their attitude is contagious! It is my job to help develop a strong foundation so that the struggles of their daily lives are just something to be noted and not necessarily used to define them. I believe in their potential to overcome and grow to be productive, contributing members of their community.
My Project
This is such a unique time to teach kindergarten! Teaching in-person during the pandemic means students can not share any supplies! Sharing is such an important skill to learn but I didn't realize how many supplies I needed once students were not allowed to share them. Therefore I need more counters and dabbers to allow each child to have their own personal set for our math lessons. No sharing also added the need for personal organizational method. The seat sacks will help keep students supplies safely stored away from other peers and will also help with transitions and preparing for activities. The bench with cubbies will also add a unique seating option for kids to read and or complete activities. We were very fortunate to receive funds from the state for our district to purchase laptops for every student but my young kindergarten students really need a computer mouse to help them navigate the virtual lessons independently- so the mouse and mousepad are truly essential to achieving this! The laser pointer will allow me to teach around our socially distanced classroom and point at the teaching charts regardless of where I am in the classroom.
