Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a hand-me-down dry erase easel that is too small and not terribly stable. It has been used by my students and myself for 9 years. This year, the back is cracked and dangerously sharp and the hinges don't lock. It collapses at the slightest touch and is a hazard instead of a teaching tool.
We are a mid size K-5 public school in in the SF Bay Area.
I have 26 eager kindergartners who always have something to say! My population covers all continents and at least a dozen languages. Our DAILY NEWS is a key component to our listening, speaking and writing curriculum.
My Project
DAILY NEWS is an exciting and integral part of our Kindergarten day. The year starts with IMPORTANT CIRCLES, where the kids all have a chance to tell the rest of the class something "important" (the key to this is that they also must listen to others when it is not their turn)! As the year progresses, we move on to writing DAILY NEWS as a class. I begin by modeling the news and the kids then take turns sharing their news. As we "write" the news, we look for High Frequency words, names, and relevant punctuation. When kids are "ready", they are given the chance to put pencil to paper and write their own version of DAILY NEWS to take home and read/celebrate with their families. While everyone does not always get to the independent writing stage, all have a chance to be successful reading and contributing to our classroom DAILY NEWS.
My current easel is ready for the trash!
WIthout a new easel to replace it, I will not be able to write and share DAILY NEWS with my students. Please help me to carry on the tradition of DAILY NEWS with my class this year and for years to come.
