"Can you speak up?" "What did you say?" "I can't hear!" These are common statements in today's classroom. Ironically, these are the same children we constantly "shh!" in the hallways and encourage to use their inside voices after recess.
My inner-city Kindergarten students are eager to learn and share.
They come to school excited and curious, but from all different types of backgrounds and starting points. Given support and opportunities they are all capable of getting a strong educational foundation that will benefit them their entire lives.
My Project
My students need a portable sound system that includes speakers, an amplifier, audio inputs, and wireless Bluetooth technology. Students will be able to use this resource for so many different things. I imagine we will find even more to use it for if we get one! Students need to communicate to learn. Communication is an essential skill but it is also the basis for learning everything you need. If you can't hear each other less learning occurs. Basically, it is difficult to project your little voice in a big classroom and remember your task. I would rather my students focus on the learning and listening than being loud enough for all to hear. I also envision this being fun. Students need repetition to become proficient for example (which can be boring ...) If they had the opportunity to perform what they have practiced & perfected it is going to make it more meaningful for sure! We also have 1 teacher iPad to use for the group. It is hard to hear so we can use this speaker to make the audio loud enough to learn from and sing along with ... which is how we do a lot of our learning in Kindergarten.
Imagine Kindergarten students speaking, listening, reading, and writing each day .
These are essential skills needed to create a life long learner. I want my students to have these opportunities and enjoy them so they want to keep learning during their lifetime. I believe that a unit such as this portable speaker and amplifier will allow students to communicate with each other much easier. Imagine how much learning will occur when the students can hear each other and enjoy audio to learn.
