I am a general music teacher in an elementary school in the south side of Chicago. My classes include teaching general music to students in grades K-8. Many of students come from a musically rich background, and I am in the early stages of building up an adequate supply of classroom instruments, textbooks, recordings, and dance props to provide these young musicians with the opportunity to study music and the arts. For this project I am requesting three items, which in entirety will constitute the kindergarten music curriculum. The curriculum set requested, “Musicplay” by Denise Gagne, includes the teachers guide with lesson plans and CDs. The set also includes 2 large books designed to be displayed for the class of students to look at and read. “Musicplay” contains traditional early childhood music activities such as movement and singing. However, this curriculum is especially attractive because it places an emphasis on developing literacy through the large books, and through reproducible student storybooks. The student storybooks are designed to be photocopied after students have learned the song. The storybooks contain illustrations in addition to the words to the songs learned, and it is intended to be brought home and shared by students with parents. This aspect of the curriculum is especially attractive, as I teach in a school that is working to raise reading scores and improve literacy rates. I am also requesting a listening resource kit, and a set of CDs so all kindergarteners in music classes are able to experience the joys of dancing to age appropriate children's folksongs. In later projects I will request curriculum for upper grade levels. My eventual goal is to obtain a complete set of student and teacher music books, in addition to recordings for each grade level through donors choose. I sincerely appreciate the generosity of all individuals and groups who contribute to donors choose towards this long-term project. Thank you.
