I am so fortunate to be surrounded by a group of 19 smiling faces every day. From the moment my "kids" walk through the door, the questions and greetings begin, and you can't help but smile as you feel the energy, curiosity, and excitement of these 5 year olds as they prepare to start their day. While they may come from different family and financial situations, they all have one thing in common...the desire to learn. We have a poem that we chant each morning: "Today is the day! This is the one! Today is the day we'll learn and have fun! Today we will grow! Today we'll be kind! Today is important! Don't leave it behind. Let's give it our all. Let's never stop! We'd better get busy before we all pop!" They know that our classroom is a place where they can feel safe, connect with friends, be challenged, build stamina, and be supported.
We are a located in a rural town in the lower Hudson Valley in New York.
Our district serves three different counties.
My Project
A sensory table will provide my students with an opportunity to learn concepts through a motivating and multi sensory experience. There are endless possibilities for the types of items that I can include in each section of the table to enhance literacy or math centers. Children can dig to find either letters, words, or numbers. A sensory table will allow the children to be up and moving, which is very appropriate for five year olds! They will be highly motivated to participate in activities that can improve fine motor skills ( for ex., using tongs to pick out items) such as letter beads) and create tactile learning experiences. The dry erase boards will be perfect for the children to record words they have built or numbers they have found in the table.
