Kindergarten: Make the First Year Count!

My students need a couch, soft seats, and items that will aid in their reading and writing development such as, White boards, TIME for Kids, composition books, and other items.

My Students

Walking into a classroom for the first time can be a bit intimidating. In an effort to create a space that is both inviting and academically enriching, my kindergarten students need items that not only aid in their educational growth, but also in classroom comfort.

My school is comprised of a population that is economically disadvantaged.

All students receive free breakfast and lunch. Assault, weapons, and theft are all serious offenses that my administration has to deal with each year. Regardless, each morning, 30 (yes, 30) smiling faces arrive in my kindergarten classroom ready to learn. Every fall, new minds are eager to jump into their first year of school. In the city of Philadelphia, it is always hard to create a classroom environment that includes all of the necessary tools needed to teach. Due to the city's deficit, obtaining basic school supplies is virtually impossible. From pencils to paper, text books to journals, teachers are responsible for providing these items each year. My students' education should not have to suffer as a result of poor decisions and choices made in Philadelphia. Luckily for them, they have teachers who care and a school building that is safe.

My Project

It is my goal to create a space that cultivates a life-long love of learning. It takes more than paper and pencils to do this. Though these items are necessary and aid to instruction, the classroom must reflect that of a positive learning environment. As young readers, students need a space that is warm and inviting. Having a "cove", or reading area, is extremely important. Using soft seats and other furniture will aid to this setting. My students will work on their writing skills with whiteboards and composition books. With sentence strips, I can model sentence starters and other techniques used in writing. Reading will be enhanced through the Time subscription.

Your donations will help me create a classroom that is complete.

My students will receive the necessary instruction needed to advance in their academic career. The simplicity of school supplies truly goes a long way. Though I have already begun my accumulation of spare pencils, computer paper, etc. it is with the assistance and kindness of your donations that I can begin my year knowing that my students will have what they need.
