Kindergarten Literacy Adventures in Guided Reading
My students need access to exciting fiction/nonfiction guided reading materials in order to support their knowledge of various text structures and vocabulary development.
My kindergarten students are from multiple cultures, backgrounds, and income levels. Our school is truly a unique kindergarten through eighth grade site, located in sunny California. We have 27 students per classroom. Many of my students are from the local neighborhood, but a large group of them are also immigrants and "overloaded" from neighboring schools. They are working to catch up academically and some are also learning English at the same time! This presents a challenge, but also an opportunity to develop learning relationships with many friends throughout the year.
My Project
My students will experience the richness of a variety of texts at their instructional level. They will learn about different topics and how to navigate multiple literacy genres. Non-fiction texts will help bring to light information and vocabulary in the areas of science and social studies. Vivid photography as well as a wealth of facts will engage my young readers and help peak their interests while hooking them into the world of reading! Fictional stories will provide social lessons, character education and entertainment while I focus on teaching the critical reading skills needed to develop fluency. These guided reading materials will allow me to fine tune instruction so that my beginning readers do not just read words, but learn how to comprehend various texts successfully and make connections to the world they live in. Reading is an adventure! My little readers are ready to learn and I am excited to guide them!
