Help me give my students multi-sensory learning bins that will help them develop language arts and numeracy skills, along with social and motor skills in my STEAM Lab.
A few years ago, our district cut the funding for Pre-K programs and my school’s unit was closed as a result of this change. I feel like this has had an adverse effect on our incoming Kindergarten students. I am seeing students with very little exposure to basic letter recognition, number sense along with students lacking the social, fine motor, problem solving skills that are developed as a result of a year of preschool.
This has caused a growing academic divide amongst students in my primary classes.
In order to combat these basic issues, I am wanting to purchase materials with this grant to build multi-sensory learning bins as the primary focus in my STEAM Lab for the upcoming calendar year.
This change will allow students to discover curriculum using a hands-on, problem solving approach that develops their social, fine motor and reasoning skills for Kindergarten classes. The goal of the multi-sensory learning bins is to build basic skills to even the playing field for incoming students.
My Project
The funds from this project will be used to create multi-sensory learning bins for Kindergarten to strengthen their ability to use fine motor skills, develop hand-eye coordination, and work on basic learning skills associated with letter recognition, letter sounds, sight words, number recognition, and math equations that develop number sense along with developing problem solving, reasoning skills and spatial awareness.
Stations will focus on anything from hand-eye coordination (using tweezers to pick up and sort erasers by size, shape or color), or letter recognition (using plastic cars with letters written on the top to alphabetical them) and even number sense (using plastic ice cubes to play counting games with a partner).
Students may use yellow ducks with numbers on the bottom to count, or use stampers to write words or equations, or miniature erasers to sort. Students will grow and learn as they sort objects, lace alphabet letters, fill bins with various shapes, items used as a result of spinning number spinners and using tactile objects and letter recognition items in the learning bins.
The various leaves, erasers, hearts, beads, therapy putty, wooden buttons, C-clip chains, counting bears, magnetic letters and dry erase boards will be used in the monthly stations. The other specific letter and math items will be used as appropriate to build on curriculum standards during that month.
