My students need cube chairs that help them regulate their bodies and become more self aware in group. I have ten students that will be using these in our classroom for morning meeting and group times.
My students are coming from an autism preschool classroom. I will have four Kindergarten and six 1st grade students. They are taught in both the ASD classroom and the general education classroom. My students have unique sensory needs and work in our classroom on academics as well as social and adaptive skills. Many of our students have success when given the right supports. They have visual schedules and communicate with visuals. Some are high functioning and some are non-verbal. They enjoy music, swinging, playing chase, exploring new materials, doll houses, the sand table, playdough and playing Legos.
My Project
This will be my second year working in a K-1 ASD classroom. I am learning more about my students and their needs each day. I had a chance to visit the preschool where my incoming students are coming from. I now have plans on how to best set up a classroom for students with autism. I am in a grad program also for autism where I am learning how to design classrooms. I have found that these chairs will serve many purposes including sitting, a table for a variety of activities and are extremely durable that is important for our setting.
These students have just begun to learn how to sit in a group.
Students with autism often struggle with attending as well as keeping their bodies calm in their own space. I have observed and heard from other ASD teachers that these cube chairs help with these goals.
Chairs will be velcroed down and help students to participate in group learning actvities such as music therapy, speech and social groups. These chairs are colorful, fun and are consistent with their previous learning to make them comfortable when they come in the fall. Chairs are sturdy to endure behaviors that often occur in a classroom like this.
I am excited to continue working with my students this fall. I greatly appreciate any type of gift you are interested in giving to help my students and my team as we help them navigate their new classroom and school. Let's do this!
