Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a high-poverty area of Los Angeles. The majority of my students are part of the free lunch program and come from low socio-economic homes environments. Having money for food and other house hold expenses takes priority over taking kids out to learn and explore or have learning games, books, or technology at home.
My Kindergarten students deserve a classroom that has all the technology they need to be able to access sites to learn and to explore the world that is waiting for them outside their small neighborhood.
I want to give my Kindergarten students a great first school experience that inspires them to develop a love of reading, writing, math and science through hands on activities and technology.
My Project
All across the country kids are coding and having a great time learning about robotics and coding. I want to give my Kindergarten kids the chance to get excited about coding too.
My Kindergarten students have been coding using Code.org but they are now ready to apply this and see it in real life by using Dash the robot and the Code and Go Mouse.
I can't wait for my student's to beam with pride and excitement that they were able to make these objects move and think of mazes and other things that they can do with them. Once they become good at using these, I will invite their parents for a coding night so that their children can show them what they have learned.
