As a teacher in a high poverty school, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with meaningful learning experiences.
My students like to move and be engaged by using hands-on activities.
Many receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to change their home experiences, but I can certainly positively impact their learning experiences.
My Project
With the flexible seating materials, my students will be able to spread out around the room and learn in their own spaces. Through providing the students with a choice of where they sit, they will be more engaged in the topics we are learning. Students will have the option to sit at a regular table with the wobble stools or calming cushions and spreading out around the room in the lap desks or scoop chairs. Each option will allow students to move freely while learning.
The seating that our school provides for the students is uncomfortable and provides very little room to move.
With developing kindergartners, I need to be able to provide them the seating needed for them to move as needed! This type seating will also be perfect for my special needs friends. At this developing age, kindergartners struggle with sitting for long periods of time. This seating will allow them to choose how they want to learn. The students won’t have to choose the same option of seating each time. The students will be able to use this seating during whole group time and while completing independent work.
I will have a magnetic board that will have seating options with students’ numbers. They will be able to place their number each day on the board that shows what seating they choose for the day.
I already have an exact plan and place for these materials. I am just missing the requested lap desks, wobble chairs, and floor seats! This project will allow my students to have a choice. Through giving students a choice, I feel like they are able to own and take pride in their learning. Please help!
