Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from high poverty, low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of them live in low income apartments. 100% of them qualify for government assistance and the federal free lunch program. Many of them are ELL learners and speak English as a second language. However, these barriers do not discourage their love for learning!
These students come to school every day excited and ready to improve their reading and writing.
Their parents are very concerned about their children's education to provide them a better life. Although they are disadvantaged in so many ways, you would never know it by their positive attitudes and eagerness to learn.
My Project
Kindergaten has changed significantly since the days of puppet shows and tea parties. Today, kindergarten is more about being able to read and write sentences. More and more legislatures are pushing away from allowing students to be children.
We still need to encourage play for five year olds.
This year, I arrived at my first teaching job with an empty classroom. My students need materials that incorporate play and cooperative learning. I have asked for play dough to help develop fine motor skills and alphabet cookie cutters for students to use in alphabet recognition and word formation. The kitchen and table set will be used to develop language skills and cooperative learning while allowing the children to use play and creativity. The lego blocks will be used for stem activities to encourage building, creativity, and higher level thinking skills.
Please help me build my classroom and acquire materials that allow children to be children while at the same time providing learning.
