Each day, we spend more than half of our time in learning stations, or centers. This allows the kids time to practice new skills and also gives me time to work with small groups. Small group time is something that we all look forward to, and having fresh books and materials helps the students stay engaged. Having new books also helps me ensure that we are reading the right books for each group of students because I have more choices.
Our classroom motto is, "Always keep trying!"
My kindergarten students are hardworking, fun-loving, always-learning individuals who soak up new information joyfully. Some students came to school this year with absolutely no preschool experience, while others have had a year or more of experience in a (sometimes non-academic) preschool. No matter what their academic experience has been, they will benefit from guided reading books that can help them continue grow as readers!
My Project
The materials I am requesting will help my students, many of whom are from lower income families, practice their reading skills. We are requesting guided reading book sets for various levels, including a set of level A&B comic books. The more exciting the books and activities are, the more motivated the children are to try their best. My students need books in the classroom that we can read together during guided reading, and that they can then read independently for fluency practice and confidence building.
Most of my students do not have access to appropriate leveled books on their reading level at home.
There are few trade books available in stores that will meet students at the lowest reading levels, which is where most of my kindergarten students are reading. The more access my students have to quality leveled books, the more chance of reading success they have!
