Hello! We are a Great Start Readiness Program located in the Southwest community of Detroit. A great majority of our children come from an environment of high risk factors; families who are poverty stricken , have disabilities, a lack of education, and suffer from abuse/ neglect. Every day my kids come eager and willing to capture the skills we are here to provide them, regardless of the language barriers or even the issues faced at home.
A generous amount of students enter this program speaking little to no english; over time, it has become such an inspiring experience to know that we are impacting their lives so much through language.
Since September, we have over 75% of our students who now speak and understand fluent English. As teachers, making friends and understanding different cultures, allows us to see the influences we've had so far.
In our class, we focus a great deal on cultural awareness, how things/people are alike/different, taking care of the environment (plants/animals) and being independent.
Being that our group is so diverse, we want out children to leave this program not only excelling academically but, have the proper intellectual and social skills needed for the future
I wanted to give the children an exciting end of the year event to give thanks to them and their parents for a great school year. The parents worked hard alongside the teachers to prepare their children for kindergarten. This day is a day to just have fun, a mobile field trip if you will! I want the children to experience wildlife up close and personal, have an experience to ride a real pony (some may never have that experience in their lifetime), enjoy face painting, and learning about different animals. Children can ask questions and enjoy holding small animals.
