I am the proud teacher of 23 kindergarteners. Three of my 20 students have special needs — on the autism spectrum. I work very diligently to have a classroom inclusive for all children. This year I am using a flexible seating system. The children are free to work in “right fit” spots they self select. They may sit in the floor, chairs, or stools. I have some scoop seats and yoga balls as well. I wish to build an environment where children have the freedom to move and learn through kinesthetic activities and materials. We are learning our way through movement and play!
These seats will allow for developmentally appropriate seating and movement through out the day in our kindergarten classroom. The seats are small enough and light enough for children to self select and move to a spot that they believe is conducive to working and learning. The children rotate through activities throughout the day and most often choose to work on the floor. These seats will allow them more flexibility and comfort. Just in the short time we have been in school and the few options they have now, the motivation and stamina during independent work time has increased. I look forward to increasing their options and having more seats that allow for wiggling and moving 5 and 6 year olds need.
