My Students
Our school is located in a large urban school district in southern California. My students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and socioeconomic backgrounds. Some of my students have attended preschool, while for others, this is their first school experience. With this variety of kindergarten readiness, comes a variety of learning styles. As a facilitator of the classroom I strive to help my students recognize how they work best. In order to find and maintain focus, I would like to allow my students a larger variety of work spaces and seating. This movement will not only keep their brains on task, but give them the opportunity to be an active participant in their own learning.
My Project
Flexible seating is a natural and simple way to allow students to be an active participant in their learning experience. By providing a variety of choices of places to sit, students can discover where they work best during different parts of the day. I have found that some of my students work best on the rug with a clipboard during writer's workshop, while others prefer to work at a desk in a chair. During reader's workshop, many students prefer to sit with a partner on crate chairs, while others prefer to sit on stools. By providing multiple seating options, students have the opportunity to move around the classroom. This not only increases their motivation and participation, but also their focus! The products I have selected will add to the seating choices we already have in our classroom. Wobble chairs will be a fun, yet motivating seating option for my wiggly students. Adding two circle tables to our room will not only provide more seating, but also provide additional group meeting places and center tables.
Flexible seating provides extra moments of movement, helps students to make choices that work best for them, and increases engagement and focus.
These flexible seating options will be extremely beneficial to our classroom as I know they will positively motivate my students to want to grow in their individual learning.
