Kindergarten Classrooms should be functional, inviting and colorful. My classroom is currently furnished with two-seater desks, pushed together to make tables, not practical for those creative art projects or materials typically used by small children. The desks separate and materials fall on the floor. Students frequently forget where their assigned seat is located. Furniture that has an appropriate surface area and is color-coded helps the teacher communicate by simply using a color-coded management system. Young children learn colors and can understand and follow a color system. Everything from the assignment of activities, lining up for recess, lunch, library, etc. is easily managed by using a colored system. When not in an assigned seat, activity or center time can be coordinated and matched to students needs using this system. Some students are asked to go the Red Table where there are sequence puzzles, the Blue Table has numeral recognition and counters. There is something specific to each color table. Name-tags have a colored sticker that help students identify where their assigned seat is located at other times of the day. There are so many challenges brought to a full-day kindergarten child and teacher. This support would make everyone's day a lot brighter!
