Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are inquisitive and eager to learn despite experiencing many hardships. I am amazed by them every day. Many of my students are English language learners.
Our school is in a low income neighborhood that used to be filled with gangs and trash.
The trash is gone, the gang influence is reduced. These two things were transformed largely through our school and its programs. Our school community works closely with the community and families. Our Family Center offers parent education and forums. They have started a garden and have arranged a mobile food pantry to come to families that may lack transport to a food bank. Our students get free breakfast and lunch at school. During a recent wildfire our cafeteria stayed open and served 2 meals a day not only to our students but any family who asked regardless of what school they attended. I am immensely proud of my school and my students.
My Project
Funding this project will enable me to set up engineering challenges for my students as part of my expanding STEM curriculum. These challenges will be incorporated into our language arts themes. For example, in the beginning of the year we do a unit on nursery rhymes. An engineering challenge to go with Humpty Dumpty could be to have teams of students build a wall for Humpty Dumpty to sit on. Teams will all get the same number of blocks and build the highest wall they can. These will then be measured. Teams will need to document their results. The materials I chose: wood blocks and planks, can be used for a variety of projects. For example, these same blocks can be used to build a chair for baby bear in Goldilocks and the 3 Bears or a bridge for the Three Billy Goats Gruff to cross. The chain reaction set and the bridge and vehicle building kits will provide more advanced design challenges.
Young children achieve more when they are actively engaged in their learning.
This is especially true for English language learners as vocabulary is best built through experiences. In these hands-on activities we can teach reading, writing, measurement, number sense, problem solving, vocabulary and social skills.
