This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a public, high preforming charter school located on the southeast side of Chicago, Illinois. My school currently serves Kindergarten through 4th grade and we will be adding an additional grade level each year until we are serving K-8. Eighty-nine percent of our scholars qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. This means that our families may find it challenging to buy the resources their children need to be successful in kindergarten.
College readiness begins in Kindergarten.
I have 34 kindergarten students who are among the most curious, and brightest students in the world. I believe in empowering my students with a high-quality education that they can use to change the world.
My Project
To gets scholars bought in and constantly excited about coming to school everyday, there are a variety of positive behavior systems that are used in the classroom.
Scholars can earn points as a whole class to earn parties, or individually earn scholar dollars to use at classroom store, and choose from a treasure chest at the end of the week.
As a classroom team, scholars can work together to earn points and once they reach 100 points they get to vote for a party of their choice. By earning points as a team, scholars learn about working together, communication and social-emotional skills.
Scholars also have an opportunity to earn scholar dollars for various accomplishments daily and weekly. They can then use their scholar dollars to purchase items or save for a bigger item at the classroom store. Having a classroom economy allows scholars to practice math skills, and develop self-regulation, patience, and life skills.
Additionally, based on the scholars color chart color each day, by the end of the week could earn their choice of prize from the classroom treasure chest. This allows scholars to set both short and long term goals, and create plans to achieve them.
