My students need materials such as a dining table, pretend food, and a trunk of dress-up costumes to help encourage their creativity and imagination in our dramatic play stations.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you ever spend hours as a child playing with nothing more than a box? It could be anything from a car to a rocket ship to a house. The possibilities were endless as long as you used your imagination. I want to give my students every opportunity to use their imagination and be creative.
I work in a Title I school where all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch due to the financial situations of their families.
Often times these families can not provide many educational or creative experiences for their children. This year I have a group of kindergartners who are curious about the world around them, and want to learn about everything. Unfortunately, some of these students have not had much opportunity or encouragement to use their imagination or their creativity to explore and learn about the world. I hope to change that in my class this year.
My Project
This year I decided to create a dramatic play station in my class. While some people may view this as a frivolous station, I disagree. Dramatic play in a kindergarten class can provide many opportunities to learn and develop skills in areas such as abstract thinking, literacy, math, science, and social studies.
There are many ways to use the requested items in a dramatic play area. For example, for our farm unit we can use the pretend food and the farm produce baskets to create a farm where the students pretend to plant and grow food that they can then sell at a farmers market. Through this students can learn about the life cycle of plants and the concept of consumers and producers. With the dress up trunk we can create a chance for students to act out and retell familiar fairy tales. We can also set up the area as a kitchen using the dining table and chairs where students could learn communication and social skills while pretending to prepare meals with the dishes and food.
It is my hope that with your generous donations I will be able to provide my students with the opportunity to use their imagination and creativity.
Not only will this enhance their understanding of the world around them, but will develop their social and academic skills.
