My students need to learn how to be authors and illustrators. A Ball for Daisy is a wordless book that shows even at age 5 you are able to tell a story with just pictures!
We are a kindergarten class at a Title I elementary school. Most of my class are on free or reduced lunch. They come to me with varying abilities from knowing how to read and some not being able to recognize his/her name.
Our favorite part of the day is when we are listening or "reading" to ourselves.
Many of my students come from homes that do not have extra money to purchase books. I want to expose them to quality literature. We are trying to build a family community where everyone matters and it is ok to make mistakes as long as we are trying. Reading helps us with fluency, communicating, writing, math and just about anything!
These books will go hand in hand with the writing curriculum. Please help us write!
My Project
Come on, let's go and write!
You can illustrate.
You can truly write!
Come on and try!
It's like you're very shy!
Do you want to write a story?
We can read a book, without any words.
We can hear the story tell its tale.
You can add details, You are very good!
Yes, I want to write a story!
These books will help the young authors build up their confidence and show them that they are authors and illustrators. In my Kindergarten class each day we have a writing lesson and they are sent to do their creations. In "The Crayon Box that Talked" the children will see how all the crayons work together to see a detailed picture, also the beauty of using more than one color. In the book "Ish" the students will see that their illustrations do not have to be perfect and they can just try their best. We will use these rich texts to aid the students' learning to write with pictures, adding sentences. Then they will write with narratives and opinions. In Kindergarten, we build the foundation for many things. Please help us build a strong foundation!
