Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in kindergarten as part of a Transitional Bilingual Education program. They are English language learners and they absolutely love coming to school, playing with their friends, singing, dancing, and practicing new academic skills. Many of these children are experiencing school for the very first time.
They are all native Spanish speaking and are learning to speak, read, and write in English.
Many have moved here from other countries and are still adjusting to our language and culture. Each child is unique and eager to learn. They have a magnetic energy that draws you in and makes your heart smile. Truly a wonderful class.
My Project
Students will be starting kindergarten in September and I would like them to walk into a fun, inviting, colorful classroom that makes them feel happy and comfortable. The rug is the biggest piece of furniture in the classroom and it stands out right away when you enter the room. The rug is where we will share much of our learning time. This is where children sit and listen to stories, engage in discussions, dance and follow directions to interactive children's songs, and do morning meeting activities like calendar and weather.
Children will be assessing the curriculum in both English and Spanish throughout the school year so I wanted to honor their native language by having a bilingual classroom rug.
This project also includes CDs the children can dance to with music in both languages. The easel holds big books effortlessly and the dry-ease board is perfect for teaching beginning writing skills. With plenty of storage bins behind the easel, children will have props and learning materials right at their fingertips to make our rug time more engaging.
