My Students
My kindergarten classroom is located in a dense, urban area in East Oakland. For many of my students, this is their first experience in school, as well as in this country. Over half of my students are English Language Learners.
My curious group of kindergarteners love exploring outdoors, but they have limited access to to outdoor areas where they can safely play.
About 92.5% of the students at our school are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. The hard working families in our community greatly value enriching educational experiences for their children, but they have few extra resources to donate towards the full cost of class field trips.
My Project
Our kindergarten students have been granted subsidized admission and a STEM class "The Measure of Me" at the Bay Area Discovery Museum in Sausalito. BADM is located on the Marin side of the Golden Gate National Seashore.
Our East Oakland students live so close to the beautiful San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridge, but many have never ventured beyond our city of Oakland.
We will be exploring exhibits at the Bay Area Discovery Museum to learn about the ecosystem of the San Francisco Bay. Our two classes will be taking a STEM class with a BADM educator to learn about measurement and math.
We are so excited to receive this grant, and don't want this opportunity to escape us because of lack of transportation.
