My Kindergarten students at Sunset Elementary School in San Francisco love to read and write! In order to cultivate their love of reading, I would like to expand our classroom library with age appropriate, classic, and culturally rich literature. I would like to arrange the books by genres in accessible bins on bookshelves. Students need to be exposed to a variety of genres in order publish creatively on their own. I also propose the creation of a book-making center in order for students to publish the many stories they create during Language Arts and Free Choice times. The book-making center will have a variety of book making materials- spiral binding machine, folders, sewing/binding materials, colored paper, markers, colored pencils, paints, etc. By the end of the school year, students will publish at least 4 books (one per quarter) using a variety of materials and genres. They will share the books (Author's Chair) with their classmates, Big Buddies (upper grade students) and parents during Open House. If this proposal is funded, it will immediately impact the 20 students currently in the class, but will create a wonderful experience for many more to come in the future.
