Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a new kindergarten teacher in an inner city school in Far Rockaway. In my school 95% of the students receive free lunch. As a teacher in a new school our schools' budget is spent on books and learning materials for the students. Teachers are asked to use their money to purchase what are considered extras. I have to say that all of my funds are gone. Kindergartners love to paint in order to express themselves. As a kindergarten teacher I ask my students to create responses to stories they hear during shared reading. As part of our balance literacy program students work in literacy centers related to the story. One of the centers in our class is called "The Art Studio." In this center students use a wide array of materials. The reason kindergartner's love to paint is because they are not able to write. They use pictures to tell stories. Unfortunately, due to lack of funds I am unable to provide to students with the necessary supplies for this center. Thank you in advance for providing my young learners with a place to express their creativity and shine.
