Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second-year teaching fellow in the Bronx. I teach kindergarten and enjoy working in the open annex environment that is separate from the school's main building. It is basically a small warehouse-like building that houses 11 kindergarten and first-grade classes. Seven of these classes have no walls; we create our walls with bookcases and wires to hang our chart paper and separate our classrooms. Due to the open environment, there is constant teacher collaboration and teamwork. The annex is a very special place. The students benefit from seeing other classes and interacting with other children, and the teachers benefit by developing a sense of camaraderie, eating lunch together and sharing ideas, common planning and collaborative activities.
The community we teach in is underprivileged and very dear to me, because I was raised nearby and surpassed environmental obstacles to become academically successful. My goal as a teaching fellow is to give back to the children of this community. However, there is still an obstacle that I feel strongly about changing. We are in serious need of a copy machine for the annex. Our school has only one copy machine, and it is often out of commission. However, copies are crucial for our activities and common planning units, and we often have to go out of our way to make copies individually (and that takes a much longer time, to the disadvantage of the students) or a paraprofessional has to trek over to the main-building (sometimes with heavy boxes)and hope our copy machine is up and running, only to carry heavy boxes back to the main building.
We also have to provide our own paper, and this can be very troublesome when accomodating about 260 students in the annex. We have often discussed how wonderful it would be if we had a copy machine in the annex and didn't have to provide paper for our copies. After all, the majority of the school's early-childhood instruction takes place in the annex, and these are the years that set the foundation for learning. Once we presented an idea or finished a common planning session, our students would certainly benefit from the immediacy and convenience of having their materials right away.
A copy machine and copy paper for the annex would not only make the teachers and paraprofessionals grateful, but the students would benefit so much, not having to wait for materials and activities that are crucial to their learning.
Additionally, there would be even more cohesiveness in our teaching because we would be able to provide copies for all teachers, if one teacher creates an activity that is useful for his/her class. A copy machine in our annex would foster a creative and collaborative learning community of teachers and students in the very formulative years of these children's lives, and everyone at our school would be eternally thankful.
Thank you for your time.
