Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to learn! Every day, they come to school ready to ask questions, explore new ideas, and do their best. Most of our students qualify for free lunch, so families are not able to provide the school with extra financial support.
Kindergartners learn best through hands-on, integrated experiences.
This is especially important for my students who are English Language Learners. They have to master academic concepts and a new language at the same time! It's important that these students have lots of time to practice their new language so they can share what they've learned.
My Project
Yoga in kindergarten is very active! Using yoga mats help each child easily identify their personal space while we practice moving and stretching our bodies. A class set of mats need safe storage. The utility cart will allow us to store mats, as well as transport materials to new practice spaces.
Fun yoga games get out the wiggles before practicing mindfulness.
A large parachute will help students work as a team to play different games. Hand/foot markers, balance pods and ribbons can be used to create obstacle courses that combine movement and balance with stretching. Yoga and mindfulness help people exercise their bodies and connect with their emotions. This is especially important for young children as they learn to identify and manage these emotions.
We end our yoga practice with mindfulness. This might include discussing problems solving techniques from a story, creating a small art project, or practicing deep breathing. These activities help students focus their attention so they can calm themselves. These calming methods can be used to help them redirect at home and in the classroom.
