Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are full of enthusiasm, curiosity and lots of energy. For many, it is their first time in a classroom setting, but they are eager to learn. They also come from very low income households and all receive free meals. Families here are not able to provide anything extra for their child. They are also surrounded with high crime, so school is the where they go to feel safe.
Regardless of their situations, these young children are ready to learn, and I want them to feel successful.
My students are also second language learners. So they need to master, not only the language, but the academics. Let's give these young minds a better chance to acquire the foundation that they need to shine.
My Project
Every start to a new school year comes with its many challenges. There is a lot to prepare not just academically, socially, but the room environment and simple incentives.
One thing I do know is the excitement children feel when they have something special that belongs to them like the "Draw and Write Journal".
They will see their progression for the year and how much growth occurs. This gives the students pride in their work as authors and illustrators. And it is also something that parents enjoy seeing and keeping.
The name plate sleeves are also a way of having their own personal space that belongs to them. It keeps the name plates in place. The supply caddies and book bins are also a way of staying organized and my class is in need of new ones. Name tags are also very important especially at the beginning of a school year especially in kindergarten. It is a way of knowing the students name and which class they belong to when out at lunch for example. Simple things like a smelly sticker can also be a positive incentive.
