Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Learning a second language as an adult is hard. Now imagine learning a second language when you are only five or six years old, and in a group. The pace is faster, and as a small child, very complicated to understand. Yet, these small children must master a new language in a different country.
My students are five and six year old Kindergarten children.
Some are new to the school district and have never been to school. Some of my students come from a neighboring country and do not have the language support at home. Almost half of my students do not speak, read, or write in English. Many of my students come from a low income family, and our school is located in one of the lowest income ares of our community. My children may not understand the socioeconomic status of their parents nor their school, but this particular situation affects them tremendously in the classroom.
Many students bring school supplies at the beginning of the school year, but about one third do not because their parents cannot afford them. Because of this, I as a teacher cannot rely or request any materials from my student's parents. My students have a need. They need English language learning materials in their classroom.
My Project
I am requesting three audio card readers and audio cards that accompany this tool so that I may create a listening center in my classroom. These materials will help my English language learners tremendously, but it will also help the few English language speakers reinforce their vocabulary. These materials will be used throughout the day by all of my students. All of my students have a need, and I am requesting your help to meet the needs of these beautiful little children.
