Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a Title I school in a lower economic area of Southern California. My students struggle with leaving their home problems at the door when they come to school each day, but they are very eager to learn.
At home, they do not have access to many of the tools that are required to succeed in today's economy, so our school and teachers work very hard to provide a safe and engaging environment for our kids, to help bridge this gap.
My Project
My students also enjoy finding a favorite spot in the classroom and diving into a story. The ground is not the most comfortable spot to sit on! That's why two soft, comfortable child-sized armchairs would be much more inviting to read on during our flexible seating time.
The soft, comfortable child-sized armchairs are a soothing blue color, which has a calming effect.
I believe it will help me meet the varied needs of my students, especially if I place them in a quiet corner in my room. My students will be able to come to this special area in my classroom when they need some quiet time to relax, read a book or do their work in peace.
Currently, I offer flexible seating in my classroom where students are able to use different furniture to sit and complete activities. My students can use portable chairs to sit anywhere in the class, stools, rockers, laundry baskets, wobble cushions and hopefully two new child-sized armchairs to be comfortable, and read or complete classwork. It was my students who suggested I write another project on Donors Choose to see about getting another piece of furniture for our classroom. I wanted it to be comfortable, yet soothing, for the variety of needs of my students and I wanted it to be more of a calming color (I am trying to redirect my room to these warmer colors now).
