Inquisitive, wonderfully inspired and energetic; this describes my busy little Kindergarteners in a high-needs urban area. 85% of the students qualify for Title One services.
The majority of my little students consist of English Language Learners who are eager to learn.
Although many speak the English language, they have a limited vocabulary. Living in a low poverty area, the majority of my students do not experience the world outside their neighborhoods. Thus, their acquisition of the English language is delayed because many of the things they read about they have never experienced.
If you have ever worked with or raised a Kindergarten aged child you know that this is the beginning stage where these little learners are learning organizational skills. In my classroom my kinders can be writing with a pencil or coloring with a crayon, and a few minutes later they cannot find that pencil or a crayon. My students sit at tables where they share their space. This can be challenging for Kinders to keep their materials organized. We work with a math workbook, an ELA workbook a journal, and a handwriting book each day. Throughout the day these workbooks are being passed out and collected from my 25 Kindergarteners. All of the crayons, and pencils are used from a central location in the center of the tables.
The Seat Storage Sacks that I am requesting will allow each of my students to store his or her workbooks and materials at their own individual chairs.
We can spend less time passing out materials, and more time on fun and engaging instruction. The students will have easy access to all of the materials. Their pencils and crayons can also be stored in their Seat Storage Sacks. This will cause less mess on their desks. If you donate to our classroom project my little Kindergarteners can be more organized throughout our busy day.
