My students need a social-emotional curriculum in order to develop pro-social skills they can apply in a classroom setting, such as the Getting Along with People program.
I work at a school in which 100% of students are economically disadvantaged. The students are exposed to gang violence in their neighborhood on a daily basis. School is often the only safe place for these students. Not only are my students living in difficult circumstances, they have learning disabilities which can make school a struggle for them.
Despite their challenges, my students are some of the hardest working individuals I have the privilege of working with.
I am inspired daily by my students. Seeing my students feel proud of their progress and accomplishments is the best part of my day.
My Project
As a special education teacher, I work with students with a wide variety of needs. Many of my students are diagnosed with autism or ADHD. Their disabilities impact not only their academics, but social-emotional skills. In addition, many of my students have been exposed to trauma or the foster care system, which further impacts their ability to function in the general education classroom and demonstrate positive social-emotional functioning.
The social-emotional curriculum and books will help my students learn to manage their emotions and address the student as a whole.
Social-emotional skills are very important to explicitly teach so that students can best access the academic content. Books such as "Soda Pop Head" and "Baditude! What To Do When Life Stinks" provide age-appropriate content with fun, relatable examples all while teaching important skills, such as how to deal with anger and coping strategies.
