Killer Chiller Series & Other High Interest Books!
My students need higher interest, but lower reading level, books that they can use for independent reading assignments. These include the American Chillers Vol 1-37 and The Outsiders.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students struggle with reading, and because of this, they often avoid reading as much as possible. However, they could truly benefit from more independent reading practice. Simply increasing their practice will help improve fluency and overall reading comprehension - my goal for all of them.
My students are 6th - 8th grade students with learning disabilities in a kindergarten through eighth grade high poverty elementary school.
My students come to me for resource support. Most of them are reading below grade-level. Some students are significantly below, while others are only a grade or two behind. While I continue to encourage reading as often as possible, many of my students resist reading. They feel silly reading those "baby" books that are written at their level and want to find something they can understand and connect with, but that is written at a level they can read. They get excited when they can find a series or author that they can connect with. Although it takes time to find such stories and authors, it is worth the search if we can get them to read more!
My Project
My students are increasingly expected to read independently. Book reports are assigned every trimester, and there is simply not enough time to provide time in the resource room for students to read leisurely, as we have other lessons to complete. These novels were selected to be high interest but low readability to ensure that my students can be interested but still able to comprehend what they are reading. The ultimate goal of these novels is to increase practice of reading to improve both comprehension and fluency. The more they read, the better they will get! I chose the American Chiller series as an important addition to other series that we have in our classroom library because of its overall reading level and the interest in mystery and action novels that many of my boys, and girls, have. The other collections are designed to be high interest and low reading levels, which is exactly what my students need.
Just one book at the beginning of a series can open up the world of reading to a kid.
We all know about the impact that the Harry Potter series had on young readers, and how parties were thrown a bookstores for the eager readers. This is a level of interest and excitement that I want my students to get to when they think about reading. I want my students to think, "You want me to read a book? Sure, that's a new adventure waiting for me!"
