Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My seventh and eighth-grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun.
My students are diversity personified: from painfully shy to audacious, from studious to silly, from spoiled to neglected, from being treasured to experiencing trauma.
When I greet them each day, some are ready to be challenged and others are ready to be challenging. In middle school, you never know what the day might hold. One thing's for certain: most days are extremely busy and completely unpredictable!
My Project
It's my first year teaching computer science after spending 10 years teaching middle school English language arts. Unfortunately, the laptops I've inherited have some major problems: they are huge and barely fit into the computer cart. Every time students return them to the cart, the computers scrape against the cables, which makes the cables get pushed to the back of the cart. No matter what I try, I can't keep the cords from falling down and getting pushed to the back of the cart. I've wasted so much time this year fighting with these cables that I've vowed to get revenge on them. As you know, the best revenge is dominance and crushing defeat.
In order to vanquish the cable monster, I need surge protectors to mount underneath my tables, cord sleeves to contain the evil power cords, and floor cord covers to prevent students from tripping over the wires leading to the power outlets.
Once I remove the power cords from the cart, I will be able to leave the computers plugged in (no more dead batteries in the middle of the day!), and I will be able to use the cart solely to lock up the computers at the end of the school day. No more cord-wrestling once and sometimes twice a day: Take that, time-sucking cord beast!
