Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How do you learn to love reading if you don't have anything to read? The challenge my students face is to become lifelong learners and to keep themselves motivated to learn despite their lack of resources at home.
I am the lucky teacher of a second grade class in Nevada.
Our school is located in a low-income, mostly Hispanic neighborhood. Most of my students are English Language Learners (73%) and are working below grade level. Our students do not have many resources and their families often do not speak English at home, and therefore, cannot provide much academic support. We also have a lot of students who move throughout the district over the course of the year. This will often leave students with gaps in their education. We do our best to meet their needs and get them on grade level. Our students simply do not have resources at home, so we do our best to provide quality learning experiences for them at school using materials that will inspire them to want to learn more.
My Project
One of the goals our school has set is to have our students read more nonfiction materials. I try and expose my students to as many literacy activities as I can to get them excited about reading, writing, and learning. I have used the Weekly Reader/Scholastic magazines with my students in the past, but I was unable to afford them this year as our annual budget's been cut. I believe my students would love the topics covered in the magazines and would enjoy reading them and doing the activities.
Your help will support my disadvantaged, ELL students as they continue to read, write, and develop on grade level.
With these materials, students can spark their interests in nonfiction materials such as science, social studies, and health issues and continue to spark their interest in learning.
