Our students love to read. We want to give them every opportunity to succeed, and that means finding resources that can help them want to come to school. They don't have a lot of exposure to extras at home, so we actively seek to engage them in our curriculum.
We have a very diverse student population with very few home resources.
Our inner-city school has almost 600 students. Over 97% of the students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and almost half are learning English as a second or third language. About 8% of our students are homeless, with many staying in family shelters.
My Project
Our library has only one copy of an Andrew Clements' book. I have read it to every third grade each year. It is dog-eared and ripped, missing pages, etc. And, each year the fourth and fifth grade students request copies of his work because they remember that read aloud. Sadly, we don't have any.
This request will furnish our library with copies of Andrew Clement's books for an author study and for our students to check out each Spring.
Making kids that love reading requires books that they love reading -and Andrew Clement's books are those kind of books for sure!
